What Is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that relates your weight to your height. It's widely used as a quick, general indicator of whether someone's weight falls into an underweight, normal, overweight, or obese range for their height.

What BMI Doesn't Measure

BMI does not directly measure body fat percentage, and it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, sex, or body composition. A very muscular person, for example, can have a "high" BMI without carrying excess body fat. BMI is best used as a general screening tool alongside other health measures — not a diagnosis.

Example Calculation

A person who is 175 cm tall and weighs 70 kg has a BMI of about 22.9, which falls in the Normal weight range.

Formula / Calculation Method

Metric: BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]².
Imperial: BMI = 703 × Weight (lb) ÷ [Height (in)]².

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BMI an accurate measure of health?

BMI is a useful general screening tool but has known limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat and can be less accurate for athletes, older adults, or during pregnancy. This tool provides general estimates and is not a substitute for professional medical advice.

What BMI range is considered healthy?

A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally classified as a normal weight range, though healthy ranges can vary by individual, age and population.

Can I use this if I'm pregnant or an athlete?

BMI is less reliable for pregnant people, athletes, and children. Speak with a healthcare provider for a more complete assessment in these situations.
