File Size Converter

Compare file sizes using decimal or binary units, with the difference made explicit.

Enter decimals with a period (for example, 2.5). Results use up to 12 significant digits; ≈ indicates a rounded conversion.

Result
1 MB ≈ 0.001 GB

1 MB ≈ 0.001 GB

Quick Reference: Megabytes to Gigabytes

MegabytesGigabytes
1 MB≈ 0.001 GB
5 MB≈ 0.005 GB
10 MB≈ 0.01 GB
25 MB≈ 0.025 GB
50 MB≈ 0.05 GB
100 MB≈ 0.1 GB
500 MB≈ 0.5 GB
1000 MB≈ 1 GB

MB and MiB count bytes differently

In this tool, KB, MB and GB use powers of 1,000; KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1,024. The same quantity of bytes therefore has different numerical values in the two systems. Check a product's or application's definition instead of assuming its label uses one system.

Worked examples

Upload limit: 25 MiB = 26.2144 MB. A 25 MiB file exceeds a 25 MB limit if the service defines MB as 1,000,000 bytes.
Storage: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 B ≈ 931.322574615 GiB. This is a unit difference; formatting and reserved space may reduce usable capacity further.
Bits versus bytes: 8,000,000 bits = 1 MB. A network rate in megabits per second is not the same as megabytes per second.

Formula / Calculation Method

1 byte = 8 bits.
1 KB = 1,000 B; 1 MB = 1,000,000 B.
1 KiB = 1,024 B; 1 MiB = 1,048,576 B.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter a number using a period for decimals, for example 2.5.
  2. Choose the From and To units. The result and reference table update as you type.
  3. Use Swap to reverse the units while keeping your entered value, or Copy Result to save the conversion.

Common Use Cases

Compare a file with an upload limit
Understand decimal versus binary capacity labels
Translate sizes for storage planning

What this result includes

This is a size converter, so no file is uploaded and no compression is performed. A converted file has the same number of bits. A real file has a whole number of bytes, even when a conversion shows a fractional number of larger units.

Results have up to 12 significant digits. Very large values are numerical estimates rather than an exact byte counter because the calculator uses JavaScript numbers. Transfer time also depends on the connection rate, overhead, and contention; converting file size alone cannot predict an actual download duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does converting TB to GiB mean storage disappeared?

No. The same byte count is divided by a different unit size. Usable capacity may separately be reduced by formatting, system files, or reserved space.

Does KB mean 1,000 or 1,024 bytes here?

KB means 1,000 bytes in this tool. Choose KiB when you mean 1,024 bytes. Some applications use ambiguous labels, so check their documentation.
