What Does This Calculator Do?

The date difference calculator finds the amount of time that separates two calendar dates. It returns a calendar-aware breakdown (years, months, days) as well as simple totals (total days, total weeks, total months) so you can use whichever unit is most useful.

How the Calculation Works

The tool counts complete years between the two dates, then complete months in the remainder, then the leftover days — the same method used by the Age Calculator. If you enter the end date before the start date, the two are automatically swapped so the result is always positive.

Worked examples

1 January 2025 → 20 August 2026 gives 1 year, 7 months, 19 days, 596 total days, 85.1 weeks, and 19 complete months.

31 January 2026 → 1 March 2026 gives 0 years, 1 month, 1 day and 29 total days. The one-month anniversary is clamped to 28 February.

Enter the same date twice for a zero gap. Enter dates in reverse order for the same positive duration, with a note that they were swapped.

Formula / Calculation Method

Calendar months use the same day of the month, clamped to the last day when needed. Remaining days are calendar days. Difference = (End − Start), broken into complete years, complete months, and remaining days using calendar-based subtraction.

Calendar duration is not a fixed number of days

A month may contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. This tool finds complete calendar months using the same day number, clamped to the last day where necessary, then counts the leftover days. Do not reconstruct total days by treating each result month as 30 days.

Select the count that fits your task

For a simple countdown, use total days. For an anniversary, use years, months, and days. The dates are treated as calendar dates without times of day; weekends and holidays are included. Total weeks is days divided by seven, rounded to one decimal.

The result measures the gap and does not include both endpoints. Use Days Between Dates for an inclusive count. Contract and billing rules may specify business days, fixed 30-day months, or other conventions that this tool does not implement.
