Check the measuring system first
A recipe's cup or gallon can mean different volumes depending on its source. The US units in this tool come from a liquid gallon of 231 cubic inches. They do not represent imperial gallons, US dry gallons, 250 mL metric cups, or rounded nutrition-label measures.
Worked examples
Formula / Calculation Method
1 US liquid gallon = 3.785411784 L.
1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces = 256 tablespoons = 768 teaspoons.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter a number using a period for decimals, for example 2.5.
- Choose the From and To units. The result and reference table update as you type.
- Use Swap to reverse the units while keeping your entered value, or Copy Result to save the conversion.
Common Use Cases
Volume is not ingredient weight
The converter does not know what fills the container. A conversion from cups to grams would require a density and may depend on temperature, packing, and ingredient type. Use a scale when a recipe specifies grams.
One US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL. This is a volume measure, separate from the mass ounce in the weight converter. One US customary cup here is 236.5882365 mL; a metric cup is commonly 250 mL. US tablespoons also differ from some regional cooking tablespoons. Check the recipe's measurement convention before entering a value. The result preserves up to 12 significant digits, but measuring spoons and jugs are far less precise.
