Compare mass in metric units, pounds, ounces, or stones. Ounces here measure mass, not liquid volume.

Enter decimals with a period (for example, 2.5). Results use up to 12 significant digits; ≈ indicates a rounded conversion.

Result
1 kg ≈ 2.20462262185 lb

1 kg ≈ 2.20462262185 lb

Mass units for scales and labels

A scale or package commonly calls its reading weight; this converter changes the mass unit of that reading. It uses ordinary avoirdupois pounds and ounces, which differ from the troy ounces used for precious metals. The metric ton in the menu is a tonne of 1,000 kg, not a US short ton.

Worked examples

Luggage: a 23 kg bag is approximately 50.7063203025 lb. If a limit is stated in kilograms, compare your original kilogram reading with that limit before rounding.
Recipe: 8 oz of an ingredient by mass is 226.796185 g. A scale reading of about 227 g follows from rounding to whole grams; 8 fluid ounces is a different measurement.

Formula / Calculation Method

Target value = input × source factor in grams ÷ target factor in grams.
1 lb = 453.59237 g; 1 lb = 16 oz; 1 stone = 14 lb.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter a number using a period for decimals, for example 2.5.
  2. Choose the From and To units. The result and reference table update as you type.
  3. Use Swap to reverse the units while keeping your entered value, or Copy Result to save the conversion.

Common Use Cases

Compare luggage allowances in kilograms and pounds
Convert ingredients weighed on a kitchen scale
Translate a workout or shipping label

Avoid mixing mass and volume

Use grams and ounces for a weighed ingredient. A cup of flour and a cup of oil do not have the same mass, so converting cups to grams also requires the ingredient's density and how it was measured. The volume converter handles US cups and other volume measures.

The definitions behind these factors are fixed, but the number shown is rounded to 12 significant digits. Your scale's accuracy still sets the useful precision. For a stone-and-pounds value, convert the parts separately or enter the total pounds; 10 stone 7 lb is 147 lb, not 10.7 stone.

Common conversions and worked examples

Choose a starting pair, then change the units as needed. The examples below explain how to interpret the result for a specific task.

KG to Pounds

A kilogram reading can be compared with a pound limit without changing the underlying mass. Start with the measured value, then round only for the precision of the scale or form you are using. This page uses ordinary avoirdupois pounds, with 16 ounces in a pound.

Pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237
Luggage: 23 kg ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 50.7063203025 lb. The result is above a hypothetical 50 lb limit; rounding it to 50 would hide that difference.
Parcel: 2.5 kg ≈ 5.51155655462 lb. If a shipping form asks for pounds and ounces, the fraction of a pound must be multiplied by 16, giving about 5 lb 8.18 oz.

Using a pound limit

Compare the unrounded reading when you are close to a threshold. A conversion does not include packaging weight or a carrier's rules for rounding billable weight. Weigh the complete parcel and read those rules separately.

Calculate kg to pounds

Pounds to KG

Use the full pound reading, including its decimal part. The pound here is the ordinary mass unit used on household scales and packaging. It is not pound-force, which measures force, or the troy pound used in some precious-metal contexts.

Kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237
Scale reading: 150 lb × 0.45359237 = 68.0388555 kg, or 68.04 kg rounded to two decimal places.
Gym equipment: a 45 lb plate is 20.41165665 kg. It is not exactly the same mass as a plate labeled 20 kg.

Convert a mixed pound-and-ounce reading

First divide the ounces by 16 and add the pounds. For 7 lb 8 oz, enter 7.5 lb; that gives 3.401942775 kg. Entering 7.8 would instead represent 7 lb 12.8 oz. Keep the same unit when comparing entries over time so display rounding does not look like a real change.

Grams to Ounces

Grams and ounces here both measure mass, so the conversion is the same for flour, butter, or a parcel when they are weighed. An ounce marked fl oz is a volume measurement and cannot be converted from grams without knowing the substance's density.

Ounces = grams ÷ 28.349523125
Baking: 250 g ÷ 28.349523125 ≈ 8.8184904874 oz. A scale displaying tenths of an ounce would show approximately 8.8 oz.
Small package: 100 g ≈ 3.52739619496 oz. Add wrapping and the mailing container before using the result to compare a shipping bracket.

Check the ounce on the label

This shortcut uses avoirdupois ounces for ordinary goods. It does not use troy ounces for precious metals or US fluid ounces for liquids. If a recipe specifies cups or fluid ounces, use its own ingredient weights or a suitable density reference instead of treating grams as milliliters.

Calculate grams to ounces

Ounces to Grams

Select this shortcut when a recipe or package gives ordinary ounces by mass. A kitchen scale can then measure the gram result directly. Fractional ounces should be entered as decimals: one and a half ounces is 1.5, not 1/2 or 1:5.

Grams = ounces × 28.349523125
Recipe: 4 oz × 28.349523125 = 113.3980925 g. On a whole-gram scale, about 113 g is the nearest reading.
Package: 16 oz = 453.59237 g, which is one ordinary pound. It is less than 500 g, even though both may be common package sizes.

Match the scale to the recipe

Extra digits in the answer describe the conversion, not what a kitchen scale can reliably measure. Round once at the end. A liquid label that says fl oz needs the volume converter; an oz label for gold or silver may mean a troy ounce and needs a different factor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this for gold or silver?

Not for troy ounces. The ounce in this tool is the avoirdupois ounce used for ordinary goods; select a converter explicitly supporting troy units for precious metals.

Does weight change with gravity?

Weight as a force depends on gravity. This tool converts units of mass shown by ordinary scales; it does not calculate force in newtons.
