What makes a video smaller?
File size depends mainly on duration and bitrate. This tool plays your clip locally and re-encodes it at a target bitrate and resolution. Reducing dimensions makes less detail compete for the available bits. A smaller bitrate trades visual detail for a smaller download, particularly in fast-moving scenes.

- Select a resolution, target bitrate, and supported output format. Keep audio unless you want a silent clip.
- Check the approximate output size, then choose Reduce video size.
- Keep the tab visible while the clip is processed in real time. Cancel safely if needed.
- Play the result, compare its actual size, and download it. Your original file is unchanged.
Common Use Cases
Compatibility and practical limits
Input codecs and output formats depend on your browser and operating system. An MP4 extension alone does not guarantee that a video can be decoded. MP4 export appears only when the browser reports support; otherwise WebM may be available. Play your download in the destination app before sharing it.
Limits are 200 MiB, 5 minutes, and 8.3 megapixels per source frame with a longest edge of 4096 pixels. Processing uses your device’s memory and battery. Frames are captured at up to 30 fps, so high-frame-rate videos lose that extra smoothness. This tool is intended for short clips, not professional transcoding or lossless archiving.
Audio, quality, and metadata
When audio is kept, the original track is routed into the encoder at a 96 kbps target without playing through your speakers during processing. If this browser cannot set up audio capture, the tool asks you to choose Remove audio or use another browser; it does not silently choose a silent export. A source without sound remains silent. Only the rendered video and selected audio are exported: subtitles, additional audio tracks, and original metadata are not preserved. HDR and wide-gamut color can change during canvas rendering; use an editor with explicit color management for color-critical work.
If processing stops
Keep this tab visible and prevent your device from sleeping. A hidden tab, playback error, or stalled video cancels processing and discards partial output. Try a shorter clip or another supported format. Files are decoded and encoded locally; no video is uploaded to ToolSprouts and no external encoder download is required.
